Hold Your Autumn Manicure—the Bedazzling Trend Has Reached Our Nails
Our take

The resurgence of bedazzling, now extending to manicures, feels less like a fleeting trend and more like a cultural exhale. After years of minimalist aesthetics and a prevailing sense of quiet restraint, we're witnessing a joyful rebellion against the understated. Summer’s embrace of body gems, a direct echo of Y2K’s maximalist spirit, has clearly paved the way for this glittering nail phenomenon. It's a playful pushback against the often-serious tone of contemporary fashion, a permission slip to indulge in pure, unadulterated fun. This shift aligns with a broader movement we’ve observed throughout the year, as seen in the continued popularity of pantaloons The Pantaloons Trend Is My Latest Fashion Obsession and even the unexpected return of denim styles beyond the classic blue jean Forget Basic Blue Jeans—Fall's Biggest Denim Trends Are Anything But, demonstrating a collective desire for more expressive, visually arresting elements in our wardrobes.
What’s particularly intriguing about this bedazzled nail trend is its timing. Typically, we anticipate a move towards more subdued palettes and textures as autumn approaches. While those elements will undoubtedly remain relevant, the addition of sparkle feels like a deliberate defiance of seasonal expectations. It suggests a desire to carry the vibrancy of summer into the cooler months, a refusal to let go of the carefree energy that defined the season. This isn't about abandoning sophistication; it’s about layering it with a touch of whimsy. It's a nuanced approach to self-expression, allowing for both elegance and playfulness to coexist. The rise of the Puma Speedcat as a summer-to-fall staple Simone Ashley Proved the Puma Speedcat Is the Perfect Summer-to-Fall Sneaker further exemplifies this blending of seasons and aesthetics – a merging of casual comfort with a distinct, statement-making vibe. The trend isn’t about abandoning the core principles of style, but rather enriching them with unexpected details.
The broader significance of this trend extends beyond just nail art. It speaks to a larger cultural moment, one where the lines between seriousness and playfulness are increasingly blurred. After years of navigating uncertainty and constraint, there's a palpable desire for joy and self-expression, even if that expression manifests in seemingly small ways. Bedazzling nails are a low-stakes, accessible entry point into this world of playful maximalism. It's a way to inject personality and a touch of glamour into everyday life without requiring a complete overhaul of one's wardrobe or aesthetic. The trend also aligns with a growing appreciation for individuality and the rejection of rigid fashion rules. It's a visual declaration of personal style, a way to say, "I'm embracing what makes me feel good, regardless of what's considered ‘on-trend’."
Ultimately, the bedazzled manicure trend isn't just about sparkling nails; it's a reflection of our evolving relationship with style and self-expression. It's a testament to the enduring power of joy and the freedom to embrace individuality, even in the most unexpected forms. As we move further into autumn, it will be fascinating to observe whether this trend evolves, incorporating richer color palettes or more intricate designs, or if it simply remains a delightful, accessible way to add a touch of sparkle to the everyday. Will we see a shift towards more muted, autumnal tones being bedazzled, or will the vibrant summer hues persist?
If your feeds are anything like mine right now, bedazzling is everywhere. From body gems adorning our limbs at summer festivals to beauty lovers bedazzling their makeup products with a smattering of multicoloured gemstones, it was only a matter of time before the Y2K-coded bling reached our manicures. And whilst we're at the end of summer, I don't see this nail art trend going anywhere. In fact, it's been quietly brewing since the spring, and it's a fun end-of-summer manicure to try for your next salon appointment.

Thankfully for us, the likes of Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter and Kylie Jenner have all served us bedazzled nail inspo of late. I consider myself a bit of a nail minimalist, but even I'm tempted to try Dua's silver chrome polka dots, or even try my hand at Kylie's flower rhinestones below.

There's something nostalgic about reaching for rhinestones again, and after a long stint of bare nails, the bedazzling nail trend is not just welcoming back maximalist nails once more, but it also allows you to get creative with different designs. You can go all out with gems all over your nails, or opt for a couple of placed rhinestones for a more minimalistic look.
