I Spoke to Cazzie David About Jeans—and Finding "The One"

Our take

Finding *the one* can feel elusive, even for those accustomed to the spotlight. In a recent conversation, comedian and Madewell's Fall 2026 campaign star, Cazzie David, shares her surprisingly thoughtful perspective on the pursuit of perfect denim—and, by extension, finding something truly exceptional. Delving into personal style and the search for effortless elegance, this piece offers a glimpse into Cazzie’s approach to both fashion and life.
I Spoke to Cazzie David About Jeans—and Finding "The One"

The quiet allure of finding "the one" – be it a person, a feeling, or, as Cazzie David explores in her recent Madewell campaign and accompanying interview, a pair of jeans – resonates deeply within the current cultural landscape. David’s willingness to articulate the seemingly trivial pursuit of the perfect denim, alongside her established voice as a writer known for sharp, introspective essays, speaks to a broader yearning for authenticity and deliberate choices in a world often saturated with fleeting trends. We've long championed the idea that true luxury isn't about ostentation, but about finding those singular pieces that elevate everyday moments; a sentiment echoed in our recent exploration of [Elegance in 2027 Will Be Defined By This Shoe Trend, This Coat Trend, and These Color Trends] where we highlighted the enduring power of timeless silhouettes and considered the future of refined style. And, much like the way a signature fragrance can evoke a specific mood – as detailed in [Ten Years Later, This Is the Sultry Fragrance I Wear When I Want to Feel Utterly Glamorous] – a perfectly fitting pair of jeans can become a quiet emblem of self-assuredness and personal style.

David's appeal lies in her ability to make the relatable feel elevated. Her essay collections, *No One Asked for This* and *Delusions*, have garnered a devoted following precisely because she dissects the anxieties and absurdities of modern life with a disarming honesty and wit. This same sensibility informs her approach to fashion. It’s not about chasing the latest runway trends, but about discovering pieces that feel intrinsically *you*. Her collaboration with Madewell, a brand often associated with accessible American style, is a natural fit. It aligns with the current shift away from maximalism and towards a more intentional, considered approach to consumption. We’ve seen this reflected in the broader fashion conversation, with a growing appreciation for quality over quantity and a return to classic, well-made garments. The quiet confidence communicated by someone who has settled into their personal style, rather than desperately seeking external validation, is a powerful and increasingly desirable aesthetic. It's a feeling akin to the understated elegance Princess Kate conveyed recently, as observed in [Princess Kate Trades Fall's Trendy Moss Green for a Favorite Emerald Dress With a Hidden Meaning During Emotional Cancer Hospital Visit], where her choice of clothing spoke volumes without a single overt statement.

The significance of this development extends beyond a simple brand partnership. It represents a broader cultural shift towards valuing authenticity and vulnerability, particularly amongst women. David's willingness to share her personal journey, whether through her writing or her fashion choices, creates a sense of connection and relatability. She isn't presenting a flawless image; she’s offering a glimpse into her process of self-discovery, including the sometimes-humorous, sometimes-challenging quest for the perfect pair of jeans. This resonates deeply with a generation that is actively rejecting the curated perfection often presented on social media. It’s about embracing imperfections, celebrating individuality, and finding joy in the small, everyday moments. The subtle power of this approach – of not needing to shout to be heard – is a defining characteristic of the modern muse.

Ultimately, Cazzie David’s foray into the world of denim, and her continued exploration of self through writing and personal style, underscores a fundamental truth: true style isn’t about chasing trends, it’s about cultivating a sense of self. As we move forward, it will be fascinating to observe how this emphasis on authenticity and intentionality continues to shape the fashion landscape and influence consumer behavior. Will we see more collaborations that prioritize genuine connection and vulnerability over fleeting trends? And, perhaps more importantly, will we continue to embrace the quiet confidence of finding "the one" – whatever that may be – and celebrating it without apology?

I read each of Cazzie David's essay collections as soon as they came out—No One Asked for This in 2020 and Delusions this past March—and loved both (I already can't wait for the next one). Since her latest release, she celebrated with a party thrown by AirMail, launched a Substack, and worked with Paloma Wool on a photo series, among other things.

This week in particular, she's been busy: she was seen at New York Fashion Week (including the Proenza Schouler show), attended the U.S. Open, and debuted as the star of Madewell’s new fall denim collection.

In the campaign video, written by Cazzie and her writing partner, Elisa Kalani, she takes on the role of "the denim expert you didn't know you needed." When asked how you know when you've found "the one," she shares the advice: "You'll just know. They'll lift you up. You'll reach for them every day, and miss them when they're not around." This is in reference to jeans.

The full capsule is available now in stores and at Madewell.com, and customers can even call her denim hotline at 1-844-DENIM55 to leave a question.

Below, I spoke with Cazzie about the collaboration, her personal style, and a few of her beauty staples.

What makes you a denim expert?

If I told you I had spent 30 years studying art history, you might say I’m an expert in that field. So technically, I’m an expert at wearing jeans, as I have 30 years of experience. I am also an expert at having anxiety and watching TV.

What’s your go-to style of jeans right now?

I’m reaching for two right now, which are basically opposites. The Low-Rise Loose Jean has a relaxed straight leg and is great if you’re like me and don’t like being restrained by clothing. The Relaxed Bootcut Jean if I am going out and want to show off a particular asset.

How would you describe your personal style in your own words, and what outfit formula do you find yourself repeating over and over? What are some wardrobe staples you can’t live without?

I tend to have one outfit that I repeat over and over until everyone in my life has seen it multiple times and I can’t get away with wearing it anymore. But you can always get away with jeans and an easy T-shirt and sweater. I don’t like to draw too much attention with what I’m wearing but I always like it to feel balanced.

Any trend—or anti-trend—you’re noticing in LA right now? What’s a trend you’re loving right now, or one you predict will be big this fall?

I have to admit I am loving the move away from leggings. Like why are they so tight it never made sense.

Do you have a go-to makeup routine? What are your staples?

I use a little bit of the Kosas brightening concealer, Merit blush in “Cheeky” and don’t leave the house without grabbing five different Clinique black honey dupes.
