Not Leggings—the Coolest Dressers I Know Reach For This Elevated Alt Instead
Our take

The shifting tides of casual style are fascinating to observe, and the recent elevation of track pants over leggings as the preferred choice for the “coolest dressers” is a telling sign of a broader cultural recalibration. For years, leggings reigned supreme as the ultimate in effortless comfort, a ubiquitous element of athleisure and off-duty chic. However, the current trend suggests a desire for something with a touch more intentionality, a quiet sophistication that leggings, in their inherent simplicity, often lack. This isn't about abandoning comfort; it’s about redefining it. It’s a move away from the ubiquitous and toward a more considered aesthetic – a subtle but significant shift that reflects a growing appreciation for understated elegance. We’ve seen similar movements recently, with readers seeking alternatives to denim in warmer weather, as highlighted in Too Hot for Jeans? These Are the Elegant Summer Alternatives Chic Dressers Are Wearing Instead, proving that comfort and style are not mutually exclusive, but rather interwoven threads in a refined wardrobe. Similarly, the enduring appeal of Rihanna’s Puma sneakers, as reported in Run, Don't Walk: Rihanna's Puma Sneakers Are Selling Fast During the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, underscores the desire for pieces that blend performance and elevated design.
The rise of track pants speaks to a broader trend of “quiet luxury” permeating fashion, a rejection of ostentatious branding and a move towards timeless silhouettes and high-quality materials. It's a response to the maximalism that defined the late 2010s, a gentle course correction toward a more restrained and intentional approach to personal style. Track pants, when styled thoughtfully – paired with a tailored blazer, a silk blouse, or a perfectly cut coat – can effortlessly bridge the gap between comfort and sophistication. This is not about wearing sweatpants to the grocery store; it's about consciously choosing a garment that embodies both ease and refinement. The key lies in the details – the fabric (think cashmere, silk, or a luxurious wool blend), the cut (a tailored, slightly tapered leg is infinitely more chic than a baggy, shapeless one), and the overall styling. Even a simple pair of black track pants can become a cornerstone of a sophisticated wardrobe with the right accompaniment. This echoes the ongoing influence of brands like Balenciaga, who are redefining the modern aesthetic through a lens of sleek and subtly provocative design, as demonstrated by their new eyewear collection, Balenciaga Eyewear Has a Sharp Attitude for Summer.
This shift also reflects a growing awareness of the power of personal style as a form of self-expression. It’s no longer enough to simply follow trends; individuals are seeking ways to curate a wardrobe that truly reflects their unique personality and values. Track pants, unlike leggings which can feel somewhat generic, offer a canvas for experimentation and personalization. They can be dressed up or down, styled in countless ways, and adapted to suit a variety of occasions. This versatility is crucial in a world where individuals are increasingly expected to navigate a multitude of roles – from working from home to attending social events – all while maintaining a sense of personal style. The move away from leggings isn't merely about a change in garment choice; it's about a broader shift in mindset – a desire for a wardrobe that is both comfortable and expressive, effortless and intentional.
Ultimately, the elevation of track pants signals a continued evolution in the understanding of casual style. It's a move toward a more sophisticated and considered approach, one that prioritizes quality, versatility, and personal expression. As we move further into an era of conscious consumerism and a desire for authenticity, it will be fascinating to observe how this trend evolves. Will track pants maintain their reign as the new casual staple, or will another unexpected garment rise to prominence? And, perhaps more importantly, how will this shift continue to shape our understanding of comfort, style, and the power of understated elegance?
It's a widely accepted truth that comfort doesn't have to come at the expense of style, and there are a handful of wardrobe staples that deliver both in equal measure. At the top of my list right now? Track pants.
Where leggings were once the style set's default for off-duty dressing, I've noticed the coolest dressers are increasingly favouring relaxed, straight-leg track pants for the day-to-day. Reinforcing the trend just this week, I spotted Sofia Richie Grainge confirming just how polished the sporty staple can look.

Off to an immeditably chic start, Sofia began her look with a tonal foundation, pairing light-grey track pants with a matching T-shirt to create a clean, polished base. Unlike leggings, which cling to the frame, track pants lightly skim, creating a softer silhouette with plenty of movement. Adding definition, Sofia then knotted a striped jumper around her hips.

Finishing the look with brown trainers and Balenciaga's City bag, Sofia's outfit was genuinely as refined, as it was relaxed.
Needless to say, you can catch me in this exact get-up this weekend. Scroll on to shop the track pants I'm adding to my basket now.
