Not Trainers—The Coolest Women In Their 60s and 40s Are Wearing Straight-Leg Jeans With These Shoes Instead

The resurgence of the straight-leg jean paired with a thong sandal isn't just a fleeting trend; it’s a subtle recalibration of style, a quiet rebellion against the hyper-feminine, overtly-styled aesthetics that have dominated recent years. We're approaching that sweet spot in summer when the temperature dips just enough to make styling your favourite jeans feel appealing again. At the same time, sandal season is far from over, and thus, the perfect conditions for one of my all-time favourite outfit formulas—straight-leg jeans and thong sandals—has arrived. It's a look that speaks to a sophisticated ease, a confidence that doesn’t require constant visual reinforcement. This pairing echoes a broader shift towards “calm luxury,” a sensibility we’ve observed gaining traction – a move away from overt displays of wealth and toward an understated elegance that prioritizes quality and intention. The styling choice also subtly alludes to a revisiting of 90s minimalism, but filtered through a contemporary lens, less grunge, more intentional chic. It’s a world away from the maximalist layering and loud branding that defined earlier trends, reflecting a desire for simplicity and timelessness. Consider the recent Chanel event highlighting the BAAND Together Festival, demonstrating where fashion meets art—1 Stage, 1 City, 1 Week: Chanel Brings Together 5 NYC Dance Companies for the BAAND Together Festival. Both exemplify this refined approach, prioritizing experience and artistry over flashy displays.

The appeal of this particular combination, seemingly simple as it is, lies in its ability to transcend age and body type. The article rightly notes its popularity amongst women in their 40s and 60s, demonstrating its versatility and timelessness. It’s a far cry from the skin-tight, low-rise denim and precarious heels that were once considered the epitome of “cool.” This isn't about chasing youth; it's about embracing a mature, confident style that prioritizes comfort and effortless elegance. The straight-leg jean provides a grounding, stable silhouette, while the thong sandal adds a touch of sensuality without feeling overtly provocative. It’s a delicate balance that speaks to a woman who is comfortable in her own skin, secure in her style choices. This aligns perfectly with the ethos of effortless chic, a style that’s been gaining momentum as women increasingly prioritize practicality and understated beauty. Think about the cultural fascination with destinations like the Balearic Islands, and the desire to emulate the effortless style seen there—Chic People Are All Visiting This Spanish Island—6 Outfits They Always Pack With Them.

This shift in styling also reflects a broader cultural conversation about femininity and power. The thong sandal, often associated with overtly sexualized fashion, is reimagined here as a symbol of confident sensuality, a subtle expression of personal style rather than a performative display. It's about owning your femininity on your own terms, without adhering to prescriptive notions of what’s “appropriate” or “desirable.” The choice to pair it with the classic straight-leg jean further reinforces this message – a grounding, practical foundation that allows the sandal to shine without feeling out of place. It’s a visual representation of inner strength and self-assuredness, a quiet declaration of independence from fleeting trends and societal expectations. Even seemingly casual posts, like "outfit for work&class ! : )"—outfit for work&class ! : ), demonstrate this evolving understanding of style as a personal expression, a celebration of individuality beyond imposed conventions.

Ultimately, the enduring appeal of the straight-leg jean and thong sandal pairing underscores a deeper longing for simplicity, authenticity, and understated elegance. It’s a style that speaks to a woman who is comfortable in her own skin, confident in her choices, and uninterested in chasing fleeting trends. As we move further into an era of conscious consumerism and a rejection of fast fashion, this emphasis on timeless pieces and effortless styling will only continue to grow. The question remains: will this trend evolve beyond its current iteration, and how will it be reinterpreted by future generations seeking to define their own style

In fact, I'm already seeing this styling formula find its feet. Spotted on the very same evening, Cindy Crawford and Claire Foy stepped out in the combination, putting a spotlight on the jeans and shoe combinaiton that chicest dressers will be wearing next.

Wearing jeans in the same timeless cut, Cindy and Claire swapped skinny and flared styles for relaxed straight-leg jeans with a slightly oversized, '90s-inspired fit. Keeping their looks effortless, they paired their jeans with pared-back flat sandals—Cindy opting for sleek T-bar thong sandals, whilst Claire chose simple flip-flops.

Whilst Cindy completed her look with a billowy black blouse and Claire leaned into the approaching season with a rich red knit, this jeans and shoe trend works just as well with a simple white tank or classic T-shirt, making it an easy outfit formula to you can revisit throughout the rest of summer and well into early autumn.

The outfit combination I'll be wearing until the very last warm day of the season, scroll on to shop the straight-leg jeans and thong sandals I recommend.
