The winds of change are always swirling in the fashion landscape, and the latest ripple suggests a significant shift in outerwear preferences. The article "Spotted in Chicago: The Jacket Trend Preparing to Usurp Leather Blazers and Bombers" highlights a growing momentum behind a specific silhouette, one that seemingly emerged from the WNBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago. While leather blazers and bomber jackets have enjoyed a long reign as autumnal staples, the article posits that a new contender is poised to take their place. This isn’t purely about fleeting trends; it reflects a broader evolution in how we perceive and express style – a move towards understated elegance and a quiet confidence that resonates with a growing segment of consumers. We’ve seen this subtle shift reflected in other areas of style, like the recent embrace of coordinated couples’ dressing, as exemplified by Zendaya and Tom Holland Zendaya and Tom Holland Do Couples’ Method Dressing With Matching 'Spider-Man' Brooches, demonstrating a desire for intentionality and considered pairings. Similarly, the recurring theme of effortless style, as showcased in our "WAYWT - July 29, 2026" WAYWT - July 29, 2026 series, underscores the preference for pieces that seamlessly integrate into a thoughtfully curated wardrobe.

The significance of this potential outerwear transition lies in what it reveals about the current cultural mood. The dominance of leather jackets for so long has been tied to a certain rebellious, almost aggressive energy. While there’s always a place for that aesthetic, a growing number of individuals are seeking expressions of power and style that feel less performative and more intrinsically aligned with their personal values. The focus on the WNBA All-Star Weekend is particularly telling. The athletes, often seen as exemplars of strength and skill, are also increasingly becoming style icons, demonstrating a sophisticated and understated approach to fashion. This signals a move away from ostentatious displays of wealth and towards a more mature, refined sensibility—a quiet luxury that prioritizes quality, craftsmanship, and personal expression over fleeting trends. We’ve also observed a similar inclination towards practicality and ease in other areas, like the rise of cool-girl biking outfits Cool-Girl Biking Outfits Give the Celebrity Street Style Scene the Pedal-and-Repeat Treatment, proving that function and style can coexist beautifully.

This shift isn’t about rejecting leather entirely, but rather about diversifying our outerwear options and allowing for a greater range of stylistic expressions. It’s about recognizing that confidence doesn’t need to be shouted; it can be conveyed through the subtle details of a well-chosen garment. This new jacket trend, whatever its precise form may be, is likely to emphasize clean lines, beautiful fabrics, and a sense of understated elegance. It’s a reflection of a consumer base that is increasingly discerning, seeking pieces that are both timeless and expressive, and that contribute to a cohesive and authentic personal style. The article’s observation about the WNBA’s growing cultural influence reinforces this point—powerful women, showcasing their style with grace and intention, are setting a new standard for what constitutes “cool.” This is less about following trends and more about embodying a certain ethos.

Looking ahead, it will be fascinating to observe how this jacket trend evolves and whether it truly manages to displace the established favorites. Will it be a lasting phenomenon, or a momentary blip on the fashion radar? More importantly, what does this say about the broader trajectory of style—are we entering an era of even greater subtlety and refinement? The key will be to watch how designers and retailers interpret this shift, and whether they prioritize quality and intention over hype and fleeting trends. Ultimately, the success of this new trend will hinge on its ability to resonate with a consumer base seeking to express their individuality through understated elegance and quiet confidence, a sentiment that feels increasingly resonant in today's world.

Last weekend, the most beloved players in the WNBA descended on Chicago to participate in the biggest All-Star Weekend in league history, with a record 19,783 fans attending the All-Star Game—the first time the WNBA outdrew the NBA ever. But basketball wasn't the only happening over the three-day event. Given how much the W has grown in recent years, it should come as no surprise that brands from all over joined in on the action, Coach being one of them. As the official handbag partner of the WNBA, the leather-goods brand played a significant role in making the 2026 All-Star Weekend not only a success, but a stylish one at that. And of all the pieces they dressed their athlete ambassadors in—including Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, and Breanna Stewart—there was particular item that seemed to make the greatest impact, and no, it wasn't a bag (though the Tabby and Empire versions were quite literally everywhere too).

The sartorial star of the show? Varsity jackets—custom Coach varsity jackets to be exact. As an attendee of the weekend myself, I personally spotted bespoke versions on six WNBA players, who wore them to various parties, obligations, and sporting events, including Coach Story Sessions, the brand's W Live pop-up, and the WNBA Shooting Stars and 3-Point Contest. Everyone's jacket was unique, featuring personal touches that gave fans in attendance (and online) hints about the off-court interests of their favorite players—a window into who they are as people instead of just athletes.

"Seeing my initials, number, and team on my varsity jacket was such a thoughtful touch," Fudd told Who What Wear about the denim-blue jacket that she wore with a jean miniskirt and heeled mules on Friday morning. "I love being part of a partnership that champions women and celebrates our individuality.” Her former UConn and current Dallas Wings teammate, Bueckers, shared a similar sentiment about the custom varsity jacket she wore with jeans and Coach's Leah Loafers to the WNBA Shooting Stars and 3-Point Contest on Friday night. "One of the things I love most about working with Coach is how intentional they are in celebrating women and investing in women’s sports," the 2025 Rookie of the Year told us. "Wearing a varsity jacket personalized with my initials, number, team, and my siblings’ initials made it even more special to represent the WNBA during All-Star Weekend."

According to Coach, the current varsity-jacket offering is just the tip of the iceberg—a hint at a larger selection that's expected to drop this fall. Of the options the brand is selling right now, there is a range of both minimalist styles and versions with multiple patches already sewn on. If you opt for the former, you'll have plenty of room to personalize your topper à la Bueckers and Fudd, adding your own unique touches.
