Which clothing companies will pay you/give store credit for used items?

Our take

Are you looking to refresh your wardrobe while decluttering? Many clothing companies offer store credit or payment for used items, allowing you to trade in your unwanted pieces for something new. Notable brands like Patagonia provide gift cards based on the condition of your items, while Madewell offers $20 for every pair of jeans, regardless of brand. Lululemon also participates, accepting women’s bottoms for in-store or mail-in credit.

Hi there! I’m hoping to make a list of companies that will give you store credit or pay you when you bring in used/unwanted items. So far I have the following:

- Patagonia - will give gift cards for returned items based on condition and quality/original price of item.

- I’ve had a very good experience with Patagonia, all items have been dropped off in store. They tend to be pretty generous within the acceptable range.

- This is their policy online:

“We estimate most items’ trade-in value to be around 20% of the MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price).

*For the following items, see the range below to get an idea of what your pieces might be worth.*

*Sweaters: $10 - $60*

*Jackets: $10 - $200*

*Dresses: $10 - $20*

*Boardshorts: $10 - $15*

*Shorts: $5 -$25*

*Pants: $10 - $60*

*Wheeled Bags: $45 - $90*

*Duffel Bags: $15 - $75*

*Please complete the Trade In quiz for a more specific estimated credit value. Your exact credit will be determined after we receive and inspect each item”*

- Madewell - will give $20 of store credit for every pair of jeans brought in. They can be of from any brand.

- They just hand you a business-card style voucher for each pair of full-length denim jeans you bring in. It really can be any brand/style from my experience.

- This is their policy online:

“1) Bring your old jeans from any brand to a Madewell store.

2) We’ll resell styles in gently used condition.

3) You’ll get $20 off for every pair you trade up.

4) Jeans that can’t be resold will be recycled”

- Lululemon - at this time is only taking women’s bottoms, like leggings, shorts, and sweatshirts

- I have only dropped off items in store and you get exactly what is stated. Yes, it’s not a lot but it can add up quickly if you have a lot of old items. I’ve been trying to downsize my wardrobe so it’s been nice to offload some items and get 1-2 things I really like in exchange.

- This is their policy online:

“We'll take the gear, you take the credit.

Mail-In - Best Value

$15-30 - Mail in

$10 - In store

Coats and Jackets

$20-75 - Mail in

N/A - In store

Mail-in values are estimates for high-quality items

What's not eligible:

Not accepted for mail‑in or in‑store trade‑ins:

Damaged or unclean gear, women's shirts, women's tank tops, sports bras, footwear, accessories, small bags, small pouches, toiletry kits, yoga props, intimates, swimsuits, ivivva, or collaborations.

Accepted for mail-in trade in but not in-store”

What other brands accept trade ins like this? I’m trying to go through what I’m getting rid of to get something in return before I drop the rest of my things off at a donation center.
