Why Queen Camilla Says She's "A Little Creaky" but "Still Standing" Following Her Summer Vacation in Balmoral
Our take

Queen Camilla’s recent, refreshingly candid remark about feeling “a little creaky” after her summer vacation in Balmoral resonated with a surprising depth, proving that even royalty experiences the universal truth of aging and the restorative power of rest. It’s a sentiment that feels almost revolutionary coming from a figure so often presented as an emblem of unwavering composure. The revelation, shared following a period spent at the Royal Family’s traditional Scottish retreat, highlights a shift, however subtle, towards greater relatability within the monarchy—a necessary evolution in an era demanding authenticity. The timing is particularly poignant, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the subsequent ascension of King Charles. It's a reminder that even within the gilded walls of royal life, the human experience prevails, and that vulnerability can be a powerful connector. We've seen similar glimpses of humanizing moments recently, with discussions around familial reconciliation—fans are hoping Prince Harry "Reunites With" an unexpected member of the Royal Family Royal Fans Hope Prince Harry "Reunites With" an Unexpected Member of the Royal Family Following His U.K. Return, According to a New Poll—and even within seemingly mundane conversations, like those concerning practicalities of dressing for inclement weather, as evidenced by the query, "Ladies in rainy climates, what are your go-to trousers?" Ladies in rainy climates, what are your go-to trousers?.
The significance of Camilla's comment extends beyond a simple acknowledgement of physical wear and tear. It subtly challenges the often-rigid expectations placed upon members of the Royal Family – the expectation of perpetual grace, unwavering strength, and an almost superhuman ability to withstand the pressures of public life. It acknowledges the reality that even those in positions of immense privilege are subject to the limitations of the human body. The Balmoral estate itself, steeped in history and personal significance for generations of royals, provides a fitting backdrop for this moment of quiet introspection. It's a place associated with respite and familial connection, a sanctuary where the pressures of the Crown can momentarily recede. Her willingness to share this small detail, to reveal a glimpse of her personal experience, signals a deliberate effort to foster a more approachable image—one that resonates with the anxieties and realities of everyday life. Furthermore, the discussion around Prince Harry’s past attempts to “Disappear” Prince Harry "Used to Try and Escape" and "Disappear" From One Element of Royal Life, Per Former Royal Butler adds another layer of complexity; the public's desire for a more authentic portrayal of the monarchy is palpable, and Camilla’s candor is a response to that yearning.
This subtle shift toward transparency feels deeply aligned with a broader cultural trend—a rejection of unattainable perfection in favor of embracing vulnerability and imperfection. The quiet luxury aesthetic, which favors understated elegance over ostentatious displays of wealth, finds parallels here. It’s about cultivating a sense of inner confidence and contentment rather than seeking validation through external markers of success or status. Queen Camilla's words, therefore, aren't merely a comment on her physical state; they're a statement about a new era of royal engagement—one that prioritizes authenticity, relatability, and a recognition of shared human experiences. It’s a move away from the carefully curated image of the past and towards a more genuine connection with the public. The deliberate lack of fanfare surrounding the announcement further reinforces this sense of understated grace and intentionality, hallmarks of the quiet luxury movement.
Looking ahead, it will be fascinating to observe whether this newfound willingness to share personal details becomes a more consistent feature of the Royal Family's public persona. Will other members follow suit, embracing vulnerability as a tool for fostering connection and demonstrating empathy? Or will this remain a singular moment of refreshing candor? The success of this approach hinges on maintaining a delicate balance—sharing enough to feel authentic without compromising the dignity and gravitas expected of the Crown. The question remains: Can the monarchy successfully navigate this evolving landscape, embracing transparency without sacrificing its timeless appeal?
The Royal Family vacations annually at their Balmoral estate in Scotland, which was one of the late Queen's favorite residences. Earlier this week, Queen Camilla returned to work, and on Wednesday, September 2, she made a solo visit to the Royal Academy of Dance global headquarters in London.
As the royal patron of the Royal Academy of Dance, Queen Camilla is a key supporter of the organization. During the visit, Sarah Platt, a dance teacher who has taught The Queen, asked about Camilla's wellbeing following her summer vacation.
Queen Camilla responded (via Hello! magazine), "I'm still standing! Just!" The Queen also added, "But I'm a little creaky," which is more than a little relatable.
Per Hello!, Queen Camilla met Platt in 2017 during an official visit to learn about the organization's Silver Swan's program, which encourages people over 55 years old to take part in dance.
Recounting their meeting, Platt explained, "She said, 'I wouldn't mind becoming a silver swan,' and said her office would be in touch. I never thought they would be, but they did, and we started only a few months later.'"

Platt continued (via Hello! magazine), "We've been doing the classes ever since. I go to Clarence House. There's normally around four of them, Her Majesty and a few friends or staff."
The teacher further said of The Queen, "She loves ballet, and she really gives it her all."

Queen Camilla might be feeling "a little creaky" after her summer break, but that didn't stop her from attending a multitude of official engagements this week.
