July trip to Scandinavia, and Iceland camper van, itinerary advice needed

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a summer trip to Scandinavia and Iceland and wanted to get some feedback on my itinerary and whether it makes sense logistically and for the priod.

I’ll likely be flying from either Italy or the United States into Copenhagen. The plan is to spend about 3–4 days there, visiting the main highlights like Tivoli Gardens, the National Museum, the Little Mermaid, and seeing the Changing of the Guard. Just a relaxed exploration of the city.

From Copenhagen, I’m thinking of doing a day trip to Billund to visit Legoland, most likely by train.

I’m also considering a half-day trip to Malmö in Sweden, though I’m not sure if it’s worth it or if I should just focus on Copenhagen.

After that, I’m debating whether to take a train from Copenhagen to Oslo instead of flying. It seems like it could be more economical and also a nice experience. If I do that, I could potentially stop in Gothenburg during the transfer and see a bit of the city so I can say I have been to Sweden.

In Oslo, I’d stay around 2/3 days, explore the capital, and possibly extend if its worth to take a trip outside the city. I’ve been looking into places like Trollstigen and nearby fjords, but I’m unsure how feasible that is from Oslo. Would renting a car make sense for that part, or is it too far to realistically include?

After Norway, the plan is to fly to Iceland. There, I’d rent a camper van and do a road trip. If time is limited, I’d probably spend 3–4 days exploring the southern coast and then turn back. If I can extend the trip to around 5–6 days, I’d consider doing the full Ring Road around the island.

I’m aware that summer isn’t ideal for Northern Lights, but that’s fine since I’m planning a separate trip in fall (possibly to Greenland) specifically for that.

A few things I’d love advice on:

  • Does this itinerary feel realistic, or is it too rushed?
  • Is the train from Copenhagen to Oslo worth it vs flying?
  • Is Gothenburg worth a stopover?
  • Are Trollstigen/fjords doable from Oslo, or should I rethink that part?
  • Is Malmö worth the half-day trip?
  • For Iceland, is 3–4 days enough for the south coast, or is it really worth pushing for the full Ring Road?
  • Is this a good period to visit the region despite the lack fo northen lights?
  • Any location or thing you suggest I should visit?

Thanks in advance for any insights!
